About the artist

Charles Drapeau, abstract painter in Montréal

The approach

Charles Drapeau is an abstract painter born in 1994 and based in Montréal. His approach, which he calls Le Chaos Structuré (Structured Chaos), draws on the raw energy of action painting and the freedom of dripping. “I find my destination along the way”: each canvas takes shape through the gesture itself, with no fixed plan.

Technique

He works in acrylic and mixed media. Paint is flung, poured and laid on thickly, in impasto, until it forms sculptural relief. Flecks of gold and silver sometimes catch the light. Each work is then sealed under a high-gloss varnish that deepens the colours and protects the surface.

Art lovers and collectors often compare his work to the physical approach of Jackson Pollock or the fiery energy of Jean-Paul Riopelle. His series are recognisable by their bold colours and strong contrasts.

One-of-a-kind works

Every canvas is a unique piece, signed and dated on the back and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. The canvases are mounted on 1½″ gallery-depth stretchers with painted edges and hang without a frame. Sizes range from 12 × 16″, starting at $400 CAD, to the large 36 × 48″ format.
